Helmut Winschermann was already a well-known hoboist when he formed the Deutsche Bachsolisten in 1960. In the early years he used to conduct this ensemble from behind his hobo, before changing to the conductor's baton. I always found his cantatas had a wonderful, natural breath, which may have something to do with the instrument he specialised in, the baroque oboe. (Maybe it would be a good idea if more conductors turned to breathing exercises before deciding on the tempo of a cantata by Bach?) This CD-box, featuring re-issues of recordings for LP, turned out to become more and more elusive the longer I searched for it. A nightly bidding session on e-Bay, involving parts of the world not known to me, proofed to be succesful, thank God, and it gives me tremendous joy to be able to present this music to the friends, followers and visitors of my blog. The biggest pearl in the crown here is undoubtably Elly Ameling. Discover for yourself, if you will, to what extra heights she lifts the already sublime cantata 199, "Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut"; in the meantime, what she does with cantata 51, "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen", is nothing short of spectacular.

The same recording featured before on this blog, but here is what seems to be the original cd, with booklet and all. Because it is rather difficult to obtain, and it contains a performance of BWV 82 which is very dear to me (the way Prey sings the phrase 'fallet' in the "Schlummert ein"-aria, for example), I did not hesitate to expand the virtual space with this little doublure.

"Martinů left a flowering of seemingly unpretentious chamber works, full of transparency and light, whose induced messages alow themselves to be understood only after long familiarity with his method of communication. In the Paris of the 1920s, he was writing in the space of a few days for Stanislav Novak and Maurits Frank the Duo No. 1 they play December 9, 1925. This short diptych, characteristic of his jazzy 'Parisian' style, juxtaposes a Praeludium, worthy of the Bach of the Partitas, and a polytonal, syncopated Rondo, an exuberant, virtuoso stroll through the Paris of Cocteau. The String Trio No. 2 is dedicated to the Pasquier Trio (Concerts du Triton, December 6, 1935). Each movement has recitatives in the form of cadenzas, close to virtuoso improvisation and inhereted from Roussel. In the Three Madrigals, Martinů, now in USA, attained the universal with this art of the instrumental madrigal which draws in sources from the Elizabethan viol music while at the same time subliming two masterpieces of Mozart, the Duos K 423/4. They are dedicated to the American duo of Lillian and Joseph Fuchs who gave the first performance on December, 22, 1947 in New York. This team gives also the premiere, January 5, 1951, of the Duo No. 2 H. 331, appearing less radiant or even austere. In 1958, Martinů was again a guest of Paul Sacher in Switzerland and wrote the Duo No. 2 H. 371 for violin-cello, pre-Classical in outline, respecting a broadened key of D. In its short fast-slow-fast-movements, it favours an almost plastic beauty of polyphony in external Allegros, the atmosphere of a sentimental stroll, not without nostalgia and close to decanted dumka in the central Adagio. In March 1959, he was writing a short didactic poco allegro for two cellos, 34 bars for the instrumental class of Suzanne Hitzel." - Booklet
"It doesn't look promising: a whole disc of string duos and trios by a composer that even his warmest admirers admit was both over-prolific and uneven. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Martinů was a string player himself, but the level of invention here is very high, and it often emerges in the forms of nervous, energetic toccata and folk-rooted lyricism that those admirers will recognise as 'real Martinů'. (...) Martinů quite often, notably in his only surviving String Trio, rewards his players for negotiating his energetic toccatas with brilliant but never merely showy cadenzas, and these fine players respond with ample tone and real sympathy for his idiom and for the touching nostalgia that often underlies it. The recording is satisfyingly full. Warmly recommended." - Gramophone's Classical Good CD, DVD and Download Guide, 2007

"I first heard a recording of the Quartets 1, 2 and 3 in Holland in 1995. A friend (later my husband) played me the music he had discovered at the public library, and I was immediately fascinated, not being able to place the idiom or language in any one country or style. I heard elements of Stravinsky, Janacek, Kodaly, Debussy, Copland. Who was this? A European? American? As I started to learn more about George Antheil, I discovered that he indeed crossed the Antlantic physically and musically, defying any strict categorization. What remained with me were his haunting melodies and motives... years after losing the recording we had, I still had the themes of the first and the third quartets in my ear. When finally I managed to get hold of a copy of the now out-of-print Mondriaan Quartet recording, the music had the same impact on my colleagues in the Del Sol. We immediately felt an affinity for the music, and got to work researching the sources." (Monica Scott)
"The Del Sol Quartet, which has given the posthumous premiere readings of some of this music, obviously knows and loves these scores inside out, thus providing more incisive and insightful interpretations than the Mondrian Quartet on the earlier disc. Accompanied by a lengthy and well-informed essay by an Italian Antheil specialist, this is an indispensable contribution to the reclamation of our national musical heritage." (Paul A. Snook, Fanfare Magazine)
