Het is eigenlijk een wonder hoe dat mogelijk is. Het zijn immers de kleinste subtiliteiten in toon, timbre, kleur, ademhaling - alle nauwelijks meetbaar - waardoor we precies die ene zanger uit talloze anderen weten te identificeren.
Florence Foster Jenkins (1868-1944) behoort zonder meer tot deze categorie, en het is welbeschouwd vreemd dat ze niet bekender is. Ze was een vermogende Amerikaanse dame en de weinige opnamen die ze heeft achtergelaten heeft ze zelf gefinancierd. Liever echter stond ze op het podium; haar laatste optreden in Carnegie Hall was een absolute sensatie. Volgens haar vaste begeleider was de zaal tot aan de nok toe bomvol en moesten mensen worden afgevoerd omdat ze hysterisch werden.
Haar pianist vertelt dat ze Mozart's beruchte Koningin van de Nacht-aria uit "Die Zäuberflöte" in éen take heeft opgenomen, zonder te oefenen en zonder reden te zien voor correcties achteraf.
