Henry Purcell - The Complete Fantazias - Fretwork

Opgenomen in St. George's, Cambridge, Engeland, juni 2008

Classic FM Gramophone Baroque Instrumental Award 2009

"Fretwork released this suite of Purcell works in 1995 on Virgin's Veritas label. This time out these new performances are a bit shorter, a bit more deliberate, perhaps even more authoritative, if that's possible where Fretwork is concerned. But the biggest change will be found in the recording itself. A vastly improved soundstage offers more than enough detail for the listener to de-strand the many closely woven lines. Loaded with lots of rosin and stringy warmth, an airiness to the playing, better, purposeful dynamics and presence all arrive with the typically immaculate and moving execution Fretwork is known for. I'm not sure what moved Fretwork to revisit this music other than its enduring melancholy and the chance to take advantage of vast improvements in digital recording. And those reasons prove to be more than enough justification. If you've had the Veritas version on the shelves since 1995, don't hesitate to join Fretwork in revisiting these intimate and timeless works. If you haven't, this is an excellent recording of works that epitomize both the period and the abilities of one of the England's most distinctive early composers in a recording that features the ideal combination of a detailed and alive performance captured by detailed and wide awake production." John Ward (ca. 1589-1638) - Upon a Bank with Roses [Consort Music] - Rose Consort of Viols

Opgenomen in Forde Abbey, april 1998-

"An extensive and diverse assortment of music for viols by John Ward
has survived, and this superb disc presents a selection of his very finest pieces. On offer here are beautifully performed works, ranging from complex six-part fantasias to three part instrumental madrigals and simple two part ayres.
Although no information is provided regarding the instruments themselves, all six players bring great warmth to their playing and I failed to discern any weak link among them. The recording quality is also excellent, although the acoustics of Forde Abbey result in a blending together of the instrumental lines in the five and six part pieces where I would prefer a greater degree of separation.

As followers of this shadowy figure (there are competing theories regarding his biography) know, Ward’s greatest and most involving works are those written for five and six parts. These appear to have been written later than his vocal music and they show great confidence and stylistic maturity. Not surprisingly then, these works are well represented on this disc.
Making use of dissonance, there are some pieces that produce a hypnotic, unsettling effect on the listener (try track 5 Leggiadra sei a 5, and you will hear what I mean). Others, particularly the fantasias, are equally mesmerising, but are played with a lightness of touch that draws the listener into a strange but delightful musical tapestry. Track 15 Fantasia No 6 in C a 4 includes fragments that, oddly enough, immediately reminded me of the later hymn popularised as "The Lord of the Dance", while, perhaps the most sublime work of all Fantasia No 1 in A a 5 (track 13), would not be out of place among J S Bach’s late fugues.
The order of pieces is very well done, such that the disc never becomes wearisome (an important achievement, considering that there is relatively little room for textural variability in music written for a
consort of viols). Four of the slighter works (tracks 7, 8, 16 & 17), include an organ part, ably played by John Bryan.
Critics of Ward’s compositions point to a certain lack of rhythmic invention, and a mechanical application of musical formulae which impacts
upon their overall quality. Yet, on this disc, all I hear are beautiful, engaging and impressive works that I class alongside the best of Byrd and Gibbons. Full credit must go to the players who never fail to bring out all the rich sonority of this wonderful music. A must buy for all lovers of early seventeenth century music for strings."

2 CD's. Opgenomen tussen 1992-2000

Philippe Pierlot, Francois Fernandez, Rainer Zipperling, Piet Stryckers, Sophie Watillon, Vittori Ghielmi, Kaori Uemura, Yuka Saito, viola's da gamba
Pierre Hantaï, Jan Willem Jansen, Guy Penson, Siebe Henstra, Robert Kohnen, orgel & clavecimbel

Afbeelding: Paolo Uccello (1397-1475)

- Jenkins was an uniquely important 17th Century master. So influential was he that when Henry Purcell was growing to maturity he was described as "the Jenkins of his age".
We have to look to the Fantasias of the younger generation of Thomas Lupo and Christopher Gibbons for anything like the flexibility of Jenkins' melody. William Lawes, killed tragically young at the siege of Chester in 1645, added adventurous instrumental gesture to idiosyncratic harmony foreshadowing the works of Locke and Purcell. Jenkins, on the other hand, produced a lyrical music, equally original, which, even at its most intense, is always smooth in outline and almost without unprepared dissonance. He is however the most modern of them all in his use of the still developing diatonic system and confident in the handling of of adventurous modulation. Carolyn Coxon in boekje

Christopher Tye (c.1505 - c.1572) - Lawdes Deo - Hespèrion XX

Opname 1988, heruitgave op Astrée/Audivis 2000

"It is remarkable what Tye can convey within works lasting as short as 90 seconds; his pure and reverent music looks forward to aspects of Beethoven’s late string quartets such as the central Heiliger Dankgesgang movement of the A Minor Quartet, Op. 132, with which it shares the visionary long held chords of painfully beautiful intensity. As with these Beethoven masterpieces, Tye’s brief studies are imbued with tremendous feeling and spirituality. Tye’s own magnum opus, his De Profundis, is entitled Sit Fast. Scored for three viols (where the majority of these instrumental works are for five players), it lasts a full seven and a half minutes, which considering Tye’s poetic capacities for condensation of material and mood, is comparatively symphonic in scope." - Volledige recensie op Epinions.com

William Lawes (1602-1645) - Consorts in Six Parts - Phantasm

Opgenomen in de evangelisch-lutherse kerk Juva, Finland, 2001

"The perverse madness, as in Lawes's five-part sets, is still found in joyful abundance, as are the energetic outbursts, the brooding meditations, the sunny pastorals, and jubilant incantations. As always, moments of the most blissful comfort can turn stormy and violent in the space of a few beats. Especially striking in the six-part pieces is a Dionysian frenzy hell-bent on breaking civilised taboos, as in the G-minor Aire and second F-major Fantasia, where the breathlessness in the part-writing produces a hypnotic effect. No one seems to have told Lawes that Praetorius categorised viols as 'quiet instruments'. (...) One thing is clear: here is a composer who frankly doesn't give a damn what you think. Which makes one care all the more passionately about what he has to say." - Laurence Dreyfus

William Lawes (1602-1645) - Consorts in Four and Five Parts - Phantasm

Opgenomen in Forde Abbey, England, August 1999

"But mostly it is due to compositional genius and his sensitivity to sound that, even in the smaller scale works, Lawes can unite each one of the disparate musical lines and then go on to take them further, to become much greater than their sum. By comparison, even the finest pieces of other composers - such as Byrd or Tomkins - wonderful as they are, can seem to be merely entwined lines playing simultaneously. The overall impression - indeed, illusion - of William Lawes' music is one that can really only be described as symphonic."

"Celestiall Witchcraft" - The Private Music Of Henry and Charles Princes of Wales - Fretwork

Opgenomen in Forde Abbey, Chard, Somerset, 27-30 april 1998

[Wendy Gillespie, Richard Campbell, Richard Boothby, William Hunt, Julia Hodgson, Susanna Pell], viola's da gamba
met
Mark Padmore, tenor
Paul Nicholson, orgel
Nigel North, luit & theorbe
William Carter, theorbe

"The title of this recording comes, appropriately, from Thomas Campion’s Elegie upon the untimely death of Prince Henry: ‘his carriage was full of celestiall witchcraft, winning all to admiration and love personall.’ Henry’s musical taste was equally so and listeners to this CD are implicitly asked to consider whether, had he lived to become king instead of Charles, the course of English musical history (not to say non-musical history) might have been quite different. Coprario’s two airs – one mourning the death of Henry, the other comforting Charles – must have provided the initial inspiration for the CD.

Happily, Henry’s music tutor, Alfonso Ferrabosco II, figures prominently here: two airs from his 1609 collection, sublimely sung and accompanied on the lute; a wistful pavan in three parts, delicately played with cadences that end with a whisper; and an In Nomine ‘through all parts’ of great subtlety. Thomas Lupo’s polished six-part fantasia that opens the recording – offering a further example of the sort of music Henry is known to have enjoyed – Fretwork’s performance doesn’t disappoint: it captures the rhetoric of the beginning, bringing crystal clarity to the syncopations of the middle section while articulating the musical architecture. William Lawes is the composer most closely associated with the young Charles I and his music is represented on this disc by a fantasia, three dances (a mournful Pavin followed by a wittily played Almain and a danceable Saraband), an affecting transcription he made of a Monteverdi madrigal, and one of the Royal Consorts in the richer, six-part version calling for two theorbos. The two Gibbons Fantasias for the great double bass allow William Hunt to shine on his wonderfully resonant larger viol.

Fretwork produces polished, sophisticated performances complemented by those of Padmore and North, offering delightfully varied and – dare I say it? – bewitching entertainment fit for a king."

Thomas Lupo (1571-1627) - Consort Music - The English Fantasy

Opgenomen in United Reformed Church, Highgate, London, 1995

Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) - Consorts for Viols - Phantasm

Dat is de achterkant want de voorkant is lelijk, kijk maar:

"To begin with, there are the six-part fantasies, gems like no others, composed with a fluency of idiom and with such a concentration of ideas that they're best heard as a group. Listening to them is like peering into a kaleidoscope: one can decide to follow the fortunes of one pattern over that of another, thereby gaining insight each time into the coherence of the whole."

Phantasm, een gambaconsort, werd gevormd in 1994. Eén van de musici behoort ook tot het vermaarde Fretwork.
