"The perverse madness, as in Lawes's five-part sets, is still found in joyful abundance, as are the energetic outbursts, the brooding meditations, the sunny pastorals, and jubilant incantations. As always, moments of the most blissful comfort can turn stormy and violent in the space of a few beats. Especially striking in the six-part pieces is a Dionysian frenzy hell-bent on breaking civilised taboos, as in the G-minor Aire and second F-major Fantasia, where the breathlessness in the part-writing produces a hypnotic effect. No one seems to have told Lawes that Praetorius categorised viols as 'quiet instruments'. (...) One thing is clear: here is a composer who frankly doesn't give a damn what you think. Which makes one care all the more passionately about what he has to say." - Laurence Dreyfus
"Dreyfus’s unselfconscious hyperbolic enthusiasm aside‚ these are beautifully thoughtout‚ sympathetic performances‚ worthy of a cultivated monarch and the composer’s quatercentenary." - Gramopohone
