"It is remarkable what Tye can convey within works lasting as short as 90 seconds; his pure and reverent music looks forward to aspects of Beethoven’s late string quartets such as the central Heiliger Dankgesgang movement of the A Minor Quartet, Op. 132, with which it shares the visionary long held chords of painfully beautiful intensity. As with these Beethoven masterpieces, Tye’s brief studies are imbued with tremendous feeling and spirituality. Tye’s own magnum opus, his De Profundis, is entitled Sit Fast. De mysterieuze sinjeur Colombe plaatste een zevende snaar op de gamba. Om de diepte ondoorgrondelijker te maken, het klagen preciezer. Klom in zijn boomhut, zijn tweede houten toevlucht, en streek er de sterren van de hemel - voor oh no-one in particular. (Maar in het pinnige struikgewas hurkte stiekem Marin Marais [gespeeld door Gérard Depardieu], om qua gambaspel nog iets van zijn ongenaakbare Meester te mogen leren of lenen.)

Wilt U een nietsvermoedende novice introduceren tot de gamba, en laten horen wat dit instrument allemaal kan, zou de eerste minuut van deze CD al moeten volstaan. In ieder geval ben ik sindsdien verslaafd geraakt aan die warm-metalige, zachtsnerpende klank - al helpt het natuurlijk ook bijzonder als Jordi Savall die voortbrengt.
